Summer Academic Work

Most returning students have summer reading assignments, and many students will have additional summer academic work to complete prior to the start of the 2017-18 academic year. Please contact the school office with questions. 


AP Environmental Science (Miss Metzler)

Read Chapter 2 (of the online textbook) and create a narrated PowerPoint. Look to the Testing Comprehension questions on page 45 as a guide for the content to include. This will be used as a review of the content for yourself when the class begins before taking the Ch. 2 test. Second, you will research three (3) species that live in our region and make a 5-10 minute video with footage of these species, giving information about where they are originally from and how they interact with other living things in the environment. Summer Reading for 2017

Students enrolled at Dock Mennonite Academy (grades 10-12) are required to complete a Summer Reading assignment. Our objectives for this assignment are two-fold: to keep your minds intellectually engaged in the “off” months and to enjoy reading a good book or books, which will be incorporated into the early weeks of your English classes. Please purchase your own copy of the assigned book(s). See your local bookstore, used bookstore, or, which often has inexpensive copies of gently used books. Having an electronic version is fine, too.

The English Department is recommending that you read thoughtfully, responding to the text as you read with a system of notation that works for you. Underlining key lines, annotating the book by jotting notes in the margins, using sticky tabs, and completing a reading journal are all useful methods of reading and responding.

You will be required to write during the first day or days in response to your reading, so bring your text and your notes. An oral presentation or group exercise may also occur.

American Literature Honors: Read Old School, by Tobias Wolff

American Literature Standards: Choose one novel from the following list. These are available from, new or used. You must own your own copy of the novel. For your own benefit, take notes, create a character list, record questions or comments, and save quotations which might be helpful. All titles are historical fiction, providing an engaging window into a particular time and/or event in American history. Bring your book and notes to class the first day of school.
